IN 1971, Kadlec opened a new four-
story hospital building. Since that time,
the region has grown, the demand for
health care has increased, technology
has advanced and Kadlec Regional
Medical Center has expanded its facility
several times.
The largest of those expansions was
the addition of the River Pavilion Tower
on the north side of the facility. One
challenge of expanding is connecting
the buildings and creating pathways
within a multi-building facility.
“Main Street” was developed at Kadlec
as one way to help guide people along the
easiest route between buildings. Even with
Main Street signage pointing the way,
getting around still remained confusing
and complicated with a number of
twists and turns winding around
existing hospital departments.
“Every time I walked through the
hospital,” said Jason Rose, Kadlec’s
director of Plant Operations, “someone
would stop and ask me how to get
somewhere. Despite our best efforts, it
was just not easy for patients and guests
to find their way around.”
Now, a three-prong project currently
underway at the hospital will not only
create a much easier connection within
the facility, but also expand the hospital’s
diagnostic imaging and interventional
radiology capabilities and renovate the
Orchard Lobby.
The new Main Street
Prior to the remodel, sitting between
the Orchard Lobby in the original
building and the newer Vineyard
Lobby was the hospital’s Diagnostic
Imaging department and getting
between the two lobbies required
going around it.
“With the completion of this phase
of the remodeling project, it will be
a straight line between the lobbies,”
said Rose. “We know patients, guests
and employees will find it a dramatic
improvement and reduce time and steps
getting between the two.”
Expanding Diagnostic Imaging
To straighten out the way between
the lobbies, Diagnostic Imaging needed
to be remodeled. The two X-ray rooms
were relocated and one additional X-ray
room was added. The ultrasound was
also moved.
“By doing this, we are able to
consolidate and centralize our diagnostic
imaging into one area,” said Rose. “We
have located the equipment strategically
for patient ease. The Diagnostic Imaging
department did a spectacular job of
thinking through what needed to be
done.”
In addition, a second Interventional
Radiology suite is being added which
will include state-of-the-art technology.
There will also be a common control
room between the two suites.
An updated Orchard Lobby
“With the consolidation of
Diagnostic Imaging, it made sense to
move the registration for these services
to the Orchard Lobby,” said Rose.
“This will also take some pressure off
the registration that takes place in the
Vineyard Lobby.”
The remodeled Orchard Lobby now
features a comfortable atmosphere with
a stone fireplace.
“It is really beautiful,” said Rose.
Portions of the project, including
opening up the new Main Street, are
now complete. The entire project will
be finished later in the summer.
Much of the planning for the
remodeling project was based
upon the “Lean” program being
implemented across Kadlec Health
System. Simply stated, Lean means
looking at ways to improve the
patient’s experience in the most
efficient manner.
