What’s happening at Kadlec
The American Cancer Society’s Cancer Resource Center has
relocated to the third %oor of the Orchard Pavilion.
The goal of the move is to be closer to the oncology
inpatients and their families in order to offer them even more
personal assistance.
The Cancer Resource Center’s volunteers interact with
the patients at Kadlec supporting them through in-person
visits and by offering the services and programs available
from the American Cancer Society. Some of those include
a patient lodging program that offers free hotel rooms for
cancer patients living more than 50 miles from their
treatment center; the Look Good...Feel Better program, which
couples volunteer cosmetologists with women experiencing
the physical side effects of their cancer treatments; and
Reach to Recovery, which matches newly-diagnosed breast
cancer patients with survivors who are one year out of
treatment.

Last year was a record-setting year for members of the Kadlec Auxiliary. Through
a variety of fundraisers, the volunteer group contributed $152,000 to Kadlec
Foundation. Equally as impressive, all volunteers at Kadlec provided more than
73,000 hours of service to Kadlec in 2010.
“We are continually amazed at the dedication of our volunteers,” said
Larry Christensen, executive director of Kadlec Foundation. “The Kadlec Auxiliary
and all of our volunteers are a tremendous asset to our hospital, and to our
community. We cannot thank them enough.”
The Kadlec Auxiliary was founded in 1949, and today it boasts more than
260 members. They perform an assortment of duties from helping patients when
they are cleared to go home, to sewing items for sale in the Kadlec gift shop,
to staf$ng reception desks in patient units around the hospital. Another Kadlec
sewing group makes pillows, mends sheets and sews other items that each year
save the hospital more than $100,000.
All told, Kadlec has nearly 500 volunteers, which has nearly doubled in the
past six years.
