Bob Rosselli’s hip replacement was performed
using a less invasive procedure called direct
anterior approach.
To perform the procedure, patients are
positioned on their backs, which provides
much easier access to the hip joint as opposed
to entering the joint from behind (posterior
approach). The anterior approach gives
surgeons direct access to the front of the hip
bone and allows surgeons to work around the
supporting hip muscles with less cutting.
IN 2004,
the Society of
Cardiovascular Patient Care
(formerly Society of Chest
Pain Centers) designated
Kadlec Regional Medical
Center as an
Accredited Chest
Pain Center —
the first in the
Northwest and
then the second
to be recertified
in theWestern
United States. The Kadlec
Chest Pain Center is also
PCI-certified, which means
it has the emergency ability
to treat acute cardiac events
using balloon angioplasty.
Recently, Kadlec was
again recertified as an
Accredited Chest Pain
Center with PCI.
The rigorous accreditation
process evaluates the care
surrounding the treatment
of patients who arrive at a
hospital with symptoms of a
heart attack.
To Kadlec patients, this
means that processes are in
place that meet strict criteria
aimed at:
●●
Reducing the time from
onset of symptoms to
diagnosis and treatment
●●
Treating patients more
quickly during the critical
window of time when
the integrity of the heart
muscle can be preserved
●●
Monitoring patients when
it is not certain that they
are having a heart attack
to ensure they are not
sent home too quickly or
needlessly admitted to the
hospital.

Benefits include:
•  Faster recovery and return to normal activi-
ties, including driving
•  Less pain
•  Shorter hospital stay
• Much less muscle and tendon disturbance
“When considering direct anterior hip
replacement surgery,” said Tracy Moran-
Patton, Kadlec’s joint care programmanager,
“it is important to have a surgeon who has
experience in less invasive procedures and
does them regularly. Our surgeons have
extensive joint replacement experience and
are championing excellent care for our Joint
Care Center patients.”

collaboration. “Kadlec has an
excellent team approach to
care,” he said.
The recently awarded
certification recognizes the
quality of joint replacement
care at Kadlec.
“By achieving Joint
Commission certification,
Kadlec has demonstrated
our commitment to the
highest level of care for
patients undergoing hip and
knee replacement,”said Tracy
Moran-Patton, Kadlec’s joint
care programmanager. “We
sought this comprehensive,
independent evaluation to
further enhance the safety
and quality of care we
provide our patients. It’s a
collaborative team effort. We
are so proud to achieve this
distinction.”
Kadlec Joint Care Center
also participates in two
national quality initiatives:
the American Joint
Replacement Registry and
the Institute for Healthcare
Improvement (IHI) Joint
Care Learning
Community. The
Registry’s goal
is to optimize
clinical outcomes
by collecting and
evaluating data on all joint
replacements performed
in the United States;
the information drives
improvements in patient
safety and quality of care,
while helping decrease costs
for future patients. And by
participating in IHI’s Joint
Care Learning Community,
Kadlec is working with
over 30 other health care
organizations and Harvard
Business School faculty to
better measure and improve
outcomes and costs for hip
and knee replacements.
Meanwhile, the need for
joint replacement surgeries
is increasing.
“Studies suggest that
between 2005 and 2030,
the demand for knee
replacements will rise
nearly 700 percent and hip
replacements by nearly
200 percent,” said Moran-
Patton. “The greatest
increase is in our 45- to
64-year-old population,
and we have a lot of
people moving into that
age range.”
For those patients, Bob
has some advice. “Don’t wait
or postpone your surgery. I
am getting stronger every
day. I feel great,” he said.
